Join us for a late-summer Mammoth Mountain get-away with this five-day cycling camp in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. This camp focuses on endurance riding, coaching-based rides, and riding with power. And we will finish the week with the challenging and scenic Mammoth Gran Fondo. You will improve your cycling skills and knowledge while riding with our top coaches and learn everything you need to successfully complete the Gran Fondo. All camp participants will receive an entry into Mammoth Gran Fondo route of their choice (102, 70 or 42 miles).
Day One: Monday
On Monday athletes will get a chance to meet CTS coaches and relax before the challenging days of riding ahead. Camp registration and bike drop begins at 2pm. We make sure your bike is properly tuned and ready to go for the upcoming training week. At 6:30pm we will have our first camp dinner provided by CTS. The itinerary for the week will be discussed during dinner.
Day Two: Tuesday
For the first day of riding, athletes will arrive at 8:30 am ready to ride the out the picturesque “Green Church road”. Coaches will spend a few minutes discussing group riding protocol, and we’ll spend some time practicing proper pacelines and the correct techniques for riding in a group. We keep the pace easy on this first day of riding to help ease into the high altitude of Mammoth (around 8,000 ft). Our acclimatization ride will have several different length options so riders can choose how far to ride on this day based on how they are handling the altitude. Longer options will include the Mammoth Scenic Loop and a climb up to Minaret Summit. We will break for a delicious CTS lunch, followed by an individual data review of the morning’s ride. We will finish the day with dinner at Gomez’s in the Village.
Day Three: Wednesday
Today’s route will put your fitness and climbing legs to the test as we tackle the challenging Upper Rock Creek road – the highest paved road in the state of California at over 10,200 ft. The views are amazing, but the air starts getting thin if you make it to the top. CTS coaches will instruct athletes beforehand on proper climbing technique along with how to properly pace on long climbs such as Upper Rock Creek. After the epic day is finally completed, a hard earned lunch will be provided by CTS, along with a data review from the ride. After the data review, CTS coaches will provide a presentation on Sports Nutrition. Tonight’s dinner is on your own at one of the great restaurants within walking distance of the Village.
Day Four: Thursday
Our route today will take us north from Mammoth Village and on a scenic loop around June Lake and Grant Lake. We will have multiple routes available today for a variety of riding options, and while we won’t ride any massive climbs like Upper Rock Creek Road, we will do a series of small climbs and accumulate 3500-5000 ft of elevation gain and 45-65 miles high altitude mountain riding. The coaches will spend time focusing on group riding skills and conserving energy while riding in a group. Athletes will be provided with lunch accompanied by power data review and a presentation on training with power. Dinner is on your own at a local restaurant.
Day Five: Friday
Today is set aside as an easier ride in advance of the Gran Fondo. We will do a scenic and comfortably paced pedal around Lake Mary, and athletes looking for a few more miles and can do the climb to the Minaret Summit overlook. After the morning ride, enjoy the afternoon and the beautiful surrounding scenery. At 6:30 pm the group will meet for the Gran Fondo dinner at Campo restaurant.
Day Six: Saturday
It’s Gran Fondo day! The ride begins at 7:30 am right outside of our host hotel. Enjoy the course, ride hard and smart and we’ll see you at the finish! Following the Gran Fondo we’ll enjoy a post-ride lunch and a review your ride data one last time. We’ll meet at 6:30 for a final group dinner at 53 restaurant in the Village to swap stories from the ride and recap the week.
Off the Bike:
Our camp is based out of the Village Lodge in the heart of Mammoth Village. When we’re not riding, you’ll want to explore the shops and activities in the Village, or just relax by the pool and hot-tub. You might also consider a scenic gondola ride to the top of Mammoth Mountain to enjoy 365 degree views from over 11,000 ft.
While a day trip to Yosemite or a hiking trip around the many great trails of the Eastern Sierra won’t fit in during our camp week, you might consider extending your trip a day before or after camp to experience more of this world-renowned destination.
Mammoth Lakes, CA is located at 7800 ft on the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The town is only a short drive from Yosemite National Park and a few miles north of Mount Whitney – the highest peak in the contiguous US!While Mammoth Lakes is better known as a winter resort town – Mammoth Mountain is home to some of the best skiing in California – it is a summer destination for MTB trails and hidden gem of great road riding. Mammoth Lakes hosted host the 2015 & 2016 Mountain Bike National Championships and they have hosted the Mammoth Gran Fondo (formerly known as the High Sierra Fall Century) for 22 years! Join CTS as we spend a week exploring the roads of this cycling destination.
The weather during this time of year can vary from 45-85 degrees as a daily high temperature and mountain weather can be unpredictable. Come prepared for all weather conditions!
