Medio: 70 Mile Ride
Tougher than the Piccolo, more manageable than the 102 mile Gran Fondo, the Medio is a great choice for the rider who has some miles under their chamois, but doesn’t want to attempt a three-digit distance.
Medio riders roll at of The Village at 8:30am in a mass start. After a brief climb up to the Scenic Loop, riders will gorge on a delicious descent for several miles, before banging a right onto the bike path that parallels highway 395. Mostly flat, the biggest challenge of this part of the ride is keeping at least one-eye on the eight foot wide bike path. The epic scenery of the Eastern Sierra makes that tough.
Riders will continue to Crowley, where they will enjoy the first rest stop that’s fully stocked with complimentary snacks and drinks.
Post-refuel, riders will double back and start heading north up and hanging a right on Benton Crossing Road, knocking out a few more miles before the second rest stop.
After grabbing some food and drink, riders will head towards Watterson Summit, which is a moderate 4% to 5% with a very short 9%-10% pitch near the top, which is manageable albeit challenging for just about every rider. At the summit, you’ll realize you’ve hit scenic pay-dirt: the perspective from the top of this climb is one of the best in Central California.
Soak in what Bicycling mag described as "Jaw-Dropping Vistas” before heading back down the fast and fun descent, grabbing some snacks at the final rest area, and completing the final section that’s equal parts challenging and rewarding.
Pull into The Village and trade out your clipless shoes for your party shoes! Post-ride there’s going to be a live band, Expo, and a buffet, which is included with your entry.
